Researchers at George Washington University used a rat model study to compare the effects of consuming genistein, a component of soy, throughout life versus beginning genistein consumption during breast cancer treatment with tamoxifen. They found that lifetime consumption of genistein reduced the rats’ resistance to the cancer treatment tamoxifen. They also found that rats consuming genistein throughout life and in adulthood before being induced with breast cancer had a lower risk of tumor recurrence. In rats that started consuming genistein after taking tamoxifen, the researchers found a decreased efficacy in the medication but these results have not been confirmed in human studies.
