Genistein is a isoflavone found in high concentration within soybeans and other soy products. Due to observed positive health benefits, scientists have been investigating the mechanisms and reasons behind its role in improving human health. A new study was published looking at the effects of GEN exposure on blood glucose level (BGL), glucose tolerance, gut microbiome (probiotic environment), and immune responses in mice. Female mice that were initially not obese, had a late onset of type one diabetes, when exposed to high doses of genistein extracted from the soy food matrix. This contradicts previous studies that have shown a link between genistein and the reduction in type one diabetes risk. Additionally, the mice study indicated a gender-specific response to genistein; female mice had greater inflammation responses, while the males showed little immune response.
